Surgères is a French commune located in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Situated to the east of the plain of Aunis and bordered by the Gères, Surgères is a town of 6,825 inhabitants as of 2021, playing the role of a geographical crossroads and transport hub (served by TGV, road junction). This chief town of a canton acts as a local centre of command in the Pays d'Aunis, a role favoured by its geographical position.
A little history
The Roman occupation of the eastern edge of Aunis is well attested thanks to the recent discovery of objects of Gallo-Roman origin (tiles, bricks, potsherds, common and Samian ware, bronze objects, Roman coins), notably in various locations within the commune of Vouhé and at several Gallo-Roman sites such as the amphitheatre of Saint-Georges-du-Bois and the Roman villa of Saint-Saturnin-du-Bois. Yet it so happens that these remarkable material traces are absent from the town of Surgères itself. In fact, since the annexation of the former commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Surgères in 1850, a few rare objects from that distant period (tiles, bricks) have been found.
