A little history
At an altitude of 13 metres, on a spur overlooking the Charente which naturally lends itself to defence. There was a château with a village enclosed by a surrounding wall, as on the opposite bank at Rochefort. The château is attested from 1092 with a first siege and its destruction by a first fire. It is one of the first rocky outcrops encountered coming from the sea, on the left bank (south) of the Charente.
