Somain covers 12.3 km², lies between 16 and 48 m above sea level and had 11,766 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Somainois.
Somain is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. The former commune of Villers-Campeau was absorbed by Somain in 1947. Somain, situated in the former mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, is known for having been a large mining commune, with the fosses La Renaissance, Saint Louis, Casimir Périer and De Sessevalle. Extraction ceased there in 1970.
A little history
A Gallo-Roman monetary hoard was discovered in 1894. Somain was in the 9th century an imperial fisc, that is to say a direct domain of the Prince, given to the princess Gisèle, daughter of Louis le Pieux, upon her marriage to the comte Evrard de Frioul. The princess Gisèle founded a chapel there which was transformed into a priory. In 867, these holy spouses founded the abbaye Saint-Calixte de Cysoing and attributed Somain to their third son Adalard.
