Solesmes is a French commune, located in the département of Nord in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Solesmois. Their nickname is les Seringueux.
A little history
The long-standing settlement of the territory is established by the discovery of an important deposit of flint tools dating from the Mousterian period, which can be seen at the Hôtel de ville. In the Gallo-Roman era the place belonged to the city of the Nerviens, whose first capital, Bavay, was replaced by Cambrai in the 4th century. The Roman road from Amiens to Bavay via Vermand, today known as the chaussée Brunehaut, passed a few kilometres from the present village. A Gallo-Roman villa stood on the land of Solesmes.
