Sérignan [se.ʁi.ɲɑ̃] is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Orb, the ruisseau de la Maïre Vieille, the ruisseau de Navaret and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, three Natura 2000 sites (« la Grande Maire », « les Orpellières » and « est et sud de Béziers »), three protected areas (the « mare d'Opoul et ses abords », « la Grande Maire » and « Les Orpellières ») and six natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The existence of a small seigneury, established within a château that has since disappeared, and protected by ramparts, is attested as early as the 10th century. In 1209, Sérignan was pillaged during the crusade against the Albigensians. In 1286, following the battle of the col de Panissars, the Aragonese troops of the Amiral de Lauria entered France and set the town ablaze. This episode left its name on the left bank of the Orb, the champ de la guerre.
