Saujon (pronounced [so.ʒɔ̃]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Saujonnais and the Saujonnaises. With 7,440 inhabitants (2021), this chef-lieu de canton on the northern outskirts of Royan is today the ninth largest town in the département and holds second place among the 33 communes of the communauté d'agglomération Royan Atlantique.
A little history
Human occupation of the communal territory is very ancient, as evidenced by a megalithic ensemble consisting of a series of dolmens at the lieu-dit La Graupe. Most have suffered the ravages of time (and of men), but one of them remains sufficiently well preserved for its original structure to be partly recognisable. Composed of five slabs forming a chamber, it was probably part of a much larger monument, most likely a covered walkway, in the manner of that of Pierre-Folle, at Montguyon. Remains of tools and fragments of ceramics, more recent in date, have furthermore been collected in several locations.
