Sainte-Marie-la-Mer is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Têt and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Until the 12th century, two villages coexisted in the surrounding area, Sainte-Marie-de-Pabirans, the seat in the 11th century of a family of Sainte-Marie, and Saint-André-de-Bigaranes. The territory then passed into the hands of the lords of Canet. In February 1198, King Alphonse II d'Aragon granted Raymond de Canet permission to fortify one of the two localities of his choosing. He decided to provide Pabirans with fortifications, which most likely caused the gradual disappearance of Saint-André, of which no trace remains today.
