Saint-Xandre [sɛ̃ sɑ̃dʁ] is a French commune, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called les Saint-Xandrais and les Saint-Xandraises.
A little history
A local tradition holds that the village was created by "laboureurs" even before the birth of La Rochelle. At the beginning of the 17th century, the cardinal de Richelieu stayed at the château de la Sauzaie, an estate belonging to Saint-Xandre, during the siege of La Rochelle (1627-1628). During the Second World War, the Nazi occupation authorities and the pro-German militia of La Rochelle established the internment camp for FTP and FFI prisoners at La Sauzaie. Long remaining a rural and strongly agricultural territory at the gates of La Rochelle, the commune has undergone significant changes to its landscapes since the 1980s.
