A little history
Before 1282, Hellin de Wavrin (maison de Wavrin), seigneur de Saint-Venant, was in dispute with the chapitre d'Aire-sur-la-Lys over their respective rights in Saint-Venant. In 1282, Robert de Wavrin, brother and successor of Hellin, signed a charter to settle the conflict. In June 1347, the king of France Philippe VI de Valois, having failed to detach the Flemish militias from the English alliance (Hundred Years War), ravaged the lands of Saint-Venant, La Gorgue and Estaires. In 1376, Alice de Wavrin, dame de Saint-Venant (men held the title of seigneur of a place, women held the title of dame) was required to acknowledge before the representative of the king that the chapitre held the right of justice over the village.
