Saint-Savinien (known locally as Saint-Savinien-sur-Charente) is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants are called the Savinois. Benefiting from a sea air owing to the river Charente, the town is a tourist destination for walks, particularly in summer.
A little history
Saint-Savinien-sur-Charente is one of the most picturesque towns of the Saintonge romane. Dominating the river Charente from its spur of limestone rocks on the outside of a bend, Saint-Savinien, already a Gallo-Roman village and later a target of Norman invasions, saw its growth begin at the start of the 18th century. Since 1274, a port has been recognised at Saint-Savinien. It was then during the 18th century that traffic became very dense thanks to boats carrying a wide variety of goods (eau-de-vie, timber, wheat, stone, salt, wine...).
