Saint-Porchaire is a commune in the south-west of France, located in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Porcherois and the Saint-Porcheroises. This small town established on the banks of the Bruant owes a great part of its renown to the château de la Roche-Courbon, a vast Renaissance residence which became, under the pen of Pierre Loti, undoubtedly the most famous resident of Saint-Porchaire, the "château de la Belle au bois dormant".
A little history
The valley of the Bruant, a tributary of the Charente, is dotted with numerous caves, which were used very early on as shelters by prehistoric man. They include the grottes du Bouil-Bleu, the grotte du Château or "du Sorcier", the grotte de La Baraude, the abri de La Vauzelle, the Grande Diaclase de La Vauzelle, the grottes de la Flétrie, the trou de la Salamandre, the grotte de Chez Coureau and the grotte des Piliers.
