Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Pierrais and the Saint-Pierraises. An important administrative and commercial centre, Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron is the principal town of the île d'Oléron.
A little history
The communal territory appears to have been populated as early as the Palaeolithic period, at a time when Oléron was not yet an island. Lithic material (scrapers, knapped flints) dating from the Acheulean period has been collected at various points across the commune. Of more recent craftsmanship, the « cuillère de Gargantua » which stands at the lieu-dit Saint-Gilles is a monolith dating from the middle Neolithic. After having been "borrowed" by inhabitants of Saint-Georges-d'Oléron in 1961, then recovered in an equally far-fetched manner and placed in front of the église Saint-Pierre, the monument has since returned to its original location.
