Saint-Paulien is a French commune, situated in the département of Haute-Loire in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is the former Ruessio (Ruessium in Latin), Civitas Vellavorum, capital of the Gaulish people of the Vellaves (Vellavi in Latin). The commune focuses on tourism, and is equipped with modern infrastructure including a large exhibition hall and an aquatic recreational park.
A little history
La Roche Dumas, 'In the upper cavity... there is an enormous rock (approximately three metres high and eight metres in circumference) which is none other than a megalith known locally as la bouchée de Gargantua. Beneath this block... a channel was carved into which the blood of sacrificed victims would flow. One can also see rings, very numerous, cut into the rock... Legend has it that Spanish prisoners (Iberians, editor's note) who were sacrificed were tied to the rings.
