Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet (in Occitan, Sant Pau de Fenolhet) is a French commune, situated in the north of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the region of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Fenouillèdes, an elongated depression between the Corbières and the Pyrenean massifs covering almost the entirety of the Agly basin. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Agly, the Boulzane, the Maury and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Formerly inhabited by humans from Prehistory, the site of the gorges de Galamus, a classified and protected natural site, was without doubt the first inhabited place in Saint-Paul. These limestone caves pierce vertiginous cliff faces at this spot. The grottes de Galamus, from the 7th century onwards, are said to have served as a refuge for hermits. These hermits lived in prayer and abstinence. They placed the site under the protection of Saint Antoine le Grand, patriarch of the desert monks.
