Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente is a commune in the south-west of France, situated on the southern bank of the Charente estuary, in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Nazairiens and the Saint-Nazairiennes.
A little history
Archaeological surveys relating to the Neolithic and Gallo-Roman periods have revealed a very ancient human occupation. Before the Revolution, Saint-Nazaire formed part of the seigneury of Soubise, whose most important lords were the Parthenay-Larchevêque in the Middle Ages, then the Rohan-Soubise from 1575. The parish of Saint-Nazaire occupied in its entirety the headland to the south of the Charente estuary, including Île Madame. Situated facing the Fouras peninsula and opening onto the golfe de Saintonge, towards the valley of the Seudre, the territory constituted a strategic site.
