Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. It forms part of historic Brittany, the pays nantais and the pays de Retz. Its inhabitants, known as the Michelois, numbered 5,714 at the 2023 census.
A little history
Occupation of the territory is attested from the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the discovery of the site of the éperon des Gâtineaux and, a short distance further south, the menhir de la Souchais. Several other megalithic sites (dolmens and menhirs) existed on the territory of the commune, but they were destroyed at the end of the 19th century. It is reported that Saint-Michel was a leper colony in the 4th century. Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef formed part of the châtellenie, baronnie, and then duché-pairie de Retz.
