Saint-Martin-des-Champs [sɛ̃ maʁtɛ̃ dɛ ʃɑ̃] is a commune in the département of Finistère, in the région of Bretagne, in France. It borders Morlaix, of which it is the principal suburb, and hosts most of the commercial and industrial zones of the conurbation. It is situated on the eastern border of Léon.
A little history
Excavations carried out in 1871 in the grounds of the château de Bagatelle during extension works uncovered several funerary urns (between 32 and 34) containing calcined bones buried at shallow depth (at 20 or 25 cm below the surface of the ground). These urns were reminiscent in their shape and ornamentation (concentric circles and squares, combinations of lines and stars, etc.) of Gaulish origin. Bronze fibulae and fragments of bracelets were also found, making it possible to date these discoveries to the Bronze Age. These objects are probably dated to the transition between the late Hallstatt civilisation and the beginning of La Tène.
