Fouesnant (pronounced [fwεnɑ̃]) is a commune in the département of Finistère, in the region of Bretagne, in France. The commune is the chef-lieu of the canton de Fouesnant as well as of the communauté de communes du Pays Fouesnantais (CCPF). It was part of the Bro-Gernev or grand-pays de Cornouaille.
A little history
The presence of two menhirs on the commune's territory, one inland and the other on the headland of Beg Meil, is evidence of human occupation of the territory at the end of the Bronze Age or the beginning of the Iron Age. Excavations currently under way on the île aux Moutons have revealed permanent settlements from various periods (Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman period). On the Glénan, funerary chests are also a trace of an ancient human presence. A Gallo-Roman fibula was found at Fouesnant.
