Douarnenez (prononcé) is a French commune on the coastline of the mer d'Iroise, which gives its name to the baie de Douarnenez. It is part of the département du Finistère in the région Bretagne. The commune was enlarged in 1945 by merging with the neighbouring communes of Ploaré, Pouldavid and Tréboul.
A little history
A stele dating from the Iron Age, which stood in a necropolis located at the entrance to the ferme de Kerru in Ploaré, of which only a fragment 22 cm tall with a diameter of 15 cm remains, decorated with friezes, is held at the musée de la préhistoire finistérienne de Saint-Guénolé in Penmarc'h. In the Gallo-Roman period, the site of Douarnenez was part of the territory of the Osismes and the port and the town were of some importance at that time, if the numerous archaeological traces discovered are anything to go by (roof tiles, statues, pottery, coins, etc.), even though the name of the locality at that period remains unknown.
