Landerneau, the town

Landerneau covers 13.2 km², lies between 1 and 175 m above sea level and had 16,363 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Landernéennes.

Landerneau [lɑ̃dɛʁno] (Landerne [lãnˈdɛrne] in Breton) is a commune in the département of Finistère, in the région of Bretagne, in France. Its inhabitants, the Landernéens and Landernéennes, numbered 16,363 at the 2023 census, making Landerneau the fourth largest town in the département. Situated at the head of the estuary of the Élorn, at the natural junction between Léon and Cornouaille, Landerneau is a true geographical, historical and economic crossroads.

A little history

Situated at the mouth of the coastal river of the Élorn, which separates the pays de Léon from Cornouaille, the town was founded near the hermitage (lann) of saint Arnoc, also known as Ternoc, a bishop cited in a Breton calendar of the 9th century, from which comes the name Lan-Terneo, which evolved into Landerne and was Frenchified into Landerneau. A confusion is possible with saint Ténénan, who is said to have been the first patron saint of Landerneau. Saint Arnoc is sometimes confused with saint Ténénan and some historians believe they are in fact the same saint. «Arnec was the son of saint Judicaël and of queen Morone his wife.
