Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque [sɛ̃ loʁɑ̃ də la salɑ̃k] is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitanie region. It is the historic capital of the Salanque and belongs to Catalogne du Nord. In historical and cultural terms, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne.
A little history
The commune of Barcarès was created on 22 March 1929 by detachment from Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, which until that point had included a coastal outlet. Pierre Latécoère, an aircraft manufacturer based in Toulouse, conceived, during the 1920s, the revolutionary project of linking Toulouse to South America by air. He established, on the étang de Saint-Laurent, his hydrobase, intended for aircraft of the Aéropostale. On 14 February 2022, an explosion of unknown origin, followed by a fire, occurred in the rue Arago and claimed eight lives, including those of an infant and a young child.
