Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the massif des Corbières, a limestone chaos forming the transition between the Massif central and the Pyrénées. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Nielle, the ruisseau du Rabet, the ruisseau du Rémouly, the ruisseau de Tournissan and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The site has been occupied since the Roman period. In 844, Charles II le Chauve confirmed by a charter his father Louis le Pieux's commitment to grant protection and immunity to a monastery dedicated to saint Laurent. In 1110, the village was mentioned for the first time in the terms villa sancti Laurentii, which points to a small village settlement without its location being established, whether close to the monastery or on the current site of the Fort. In 1175, the village was called Sanctus Laurencius de Cabraica, a name that would evolve to give successively, in the 14th century, Saint Laurens, and then in the 18th century Saint-Laurent de la Cabrerisse.
