Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Jeannais. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Vallespir, a former viscountcy (encompassed during the Middle Ages within the viscountcy of Castelnou), attached to France by the treaty of the Pyrénées (1659) and corresponding approximately to the valley of the Tech, from its source to Céret.
A little history
During the Middle Ages, gold and silver mines were worked, though their location is today unknown. In 1188, an abbot obtained from Alphonse Ier d'Aragon permission to build a fortified castle within the parish of Sant Joan Pla de Corts. This castle, having first welcomed a family of Saint-Jean at the head of the seigneury, became the summer residence of the Kings of Majorca.
