Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine), and is the chief town of one of the five arrondissements of the département. Its inhabitants are known as the Angériens. With a municipal population of 6,784 inhabitants (2023) and a total population of 7,218, at the centre of an attraction area of 20,719 inhabitants, this sub-prefecture is the principal town of its arrondissement.
A little history
A necropolis dating back 9,000 years was discovered on the banks of the Boutonne. The Gallo-Roman villas of Angeriacum were pillaged by the Germains and then by the Bagaudes, around a hundred years after the fall of the Roman Empire. A residence of the ducs d'Aquitaine, as well as a chapel, were subsequently built on the same site. It was in 817 that a monastery was founded by Pépin Ier d'Aquitaine to house the relic of saint Jean-Baptiste.
