Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a French commune, situated in the département of Loiret in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Ouanne, the ru du Pont Guinant and various other small watercourses. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a rural commune with 1,849 inhabitants in 2023, having experienced a strong rise in population since 1968.
A little history
Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which was known as Saint-Germain-les-Gy at the time when the village was dependent on Gy-les-Nonains, is said to take its name from the passage of Saint Germain, bishop of Auxerre, in 445. Carolingian tombs were discovered on the site of the Château de Javot, now destroyed. Robert Knolle, who used Malicorne, 25 km away, amongst other places as a base for pillaging towards the end of 1358, caused great damage to Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The population, under the leadership of their lord Gilles Lécuyer, had taken refuge in the upper castle of Château-Renard.
