Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde (pronounced [sɛ̃.fɔʁ.syʁ.ʒi.ʁɔ̃d]) is a commune in the south-west of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Fortais and the Saint-Fortaises. Established in the heart of a region combining viticultural hills, wooded valleys and estuarine marshes, on the borders of Saintonge, this small town stretches around its church with its characteristic form.
A little history
The presence of an ancient port (of which a lighthouse remains, known as the tour de Beaumont) appears to be attested from the Roman period. Rendered unusable as a result of the accumulation of alluvial deposits, it was replaced several centuries later by a new port, known as Port-Maubert. In the 17th century, following skirmishes between French and English navies, this port was used in turn by Richelieu's French fleet, then by the British fleet which came to take on supplies there. Archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a necropolis dated to the early Middle Ages at the lieu-dit les Tombeaux.
