Saint-Étienne-au-Mont is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France. It took the official name of Saint-Étienne-au-Mont in 1937. Its inhabitants are known as the Stéphanois.
A little history
During Antiquity, the site was occupied by the Morins. The Liane was a river with abundant waters and its estuary became at each tide a veritable lake which stretched as far as Isques, a village whose name derives from a Celtic word meaning water. At low tide, the lake gave way to an impassable lagoon. In order to connect the two banks and link the peninsula of Outreau and all the land to the south of the Liane with Boulogne-sur-Mer, which was then called Gesoriacum, and also to break the force of the current, a bridge was built downstream of Isques, at the point where the valley narrows.
