Saint-Denis-d'Oléron is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Dyonisiens and the Dyonisiennes. Located at the northern tip of the île d'Oléron, facing the coasts of the Ré area and the city of La Rochelle, this small residential town of just under 1,500 inhabitants is also a well-known seaside resort, benefiting from three sandy beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean, a watersports centre and a marina with 760 moorings.
A little history
In 1904 the railway line of the île d'Oléron was inaugurated. Of metric gauge and operated by the chemins de fer économiques des Charentes, the train made it possible at the time to reach Saint-Trojan-les-Bains in the south of the island in 2h20 at the end of a 36 km route. The service would cease in 1935 due to competition from road transport. In 1940, the residence built between 1904 and 1907 by docteur Lebon was transformed into a Kommandantur by the German occupying forces, before becoming the hotel restaurant Le Moulin de la Galette, today converted into a gîte with bed and breakfast rooms.
