A little history
During the construction of the Lille to Dunkerque railway line in the 19th century, a stone axe and fragments of pottery were discovered on the territory of Saint-André. These vestiges of the past attest to the settlement of Gaulish peoples on these lands. The Basse Deûle and the rivers of the region attracted the populations of the time because the presence of water allowed them to practise fishing and hunting. Later, as the kingdom of the Franks extended across the region, the first inhabitants organised themselves into small communities to carry out the clearing of woodland and the cultivation of the land. These were the Frankish villages and the Carolingian manses.
