Saint-André-de-Sangonis, the town

Saint-André-de-Sangonis covers 19.6 km², lies between 26 and 122 m above sea level and had 6,427 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Andréens.

Saint-André-de-Sangonis [sɛ̃.t‿ɑ̃.dʁe də sɑ̃ɡɔnis] (Sant Andrieu de Sangònis ['sant an'driew de san'ɡɔnis] in Occitan), is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Hérault, the Lergue, the ruisseau de Lagamas, the ruisseau de l'Argenteille, the ruisseau de Tieulade and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the gorges de l'Hérault) and three natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.

A little history

The town is cited in 934 in the cartulaire de Gellone no 74 under the name parochia sancti Andreas Sanguivomensis, and, in 996, in the cartulaire d'Aniane under the name villa de Sangonias. The remains of a villa show that occupation of the site dates back at least to the Roman period. The vestiges of a Roman bridge survive 300 m from the pont de Gignac, which allowed the road from Nîmes to Toulouse to cross the Hérault. The village appears to have belonged in 1031 to the abbaye de Gellone, then to the bishop of Lodève.
