Saint-Aigulin is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Aigulinois and the Saint-Aigulinoises. Saint-Aigulin has, in Charente-Maritime, the geographical distinction of being the easternmost commune in the département and it also has the geodesic distinction of being flanked by the famous meridian of Greenwich, which passes before the bridge over the Dronne before reaching La Roche-Chalais, in the neighbouring département of Dordogne.
A little history
In the 4th century AD, monk settlers established themselves in a bend of the river to found their community. At the same time as it provided them with the water necessary for life, the Dronne, by its meandering at that precise spot, afforded them part of the protective system indispensable in that era, when one hoped to survive over the long term, far from towns. A wooden palisade completed the enclosure.
