Roullet-Saint-Estèphe is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). A residential commune, it forms part of the urban area of Angoulême. Its inhabitants are known as the Roullet-Stéphanois and the Roullet-Stéphanoises.
A little history
The perpetual vicariate of Roullet belonged, as far back as the time of Charlemagne, to the abbey of Saint-Cybard, which lost it in 1162 but retained various rights over it until 1791. In the 12th century it was united with the archdeaconry of the bishopric of Angoulême, which shared with the abbey of La Couronne the bulk of the tithes and granted it the bare subsistence portion. The château de Rocheraud was one of the four Roches of the Angoumois, along with La Rochefoucauld, La Rochebeaucourt and la Rochandry. The original château was built in the 9th century.
