Roujan [ʁu.ʒɑ̃] (in Occitan Rojan [ru.'d͡ʒan]) is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Peyne and by various other small watercourses. Roujan is a rural commune with 2,336 inhabitants in 2023.
A little history
At its origins the village was a castrum, a fortified camp occupied by the Romans. Its circulade town plan bears witness to this. Organised around a central nucleus, the walls of the houses facing outward from the village form the ramparts. The arrangement offered the advantage, through the absence of blind spots, of being better defended in the event of an attack.
