Roscoff, the town
Roscoff covers 6.2 km², lies between 0 and 58 m above sea level and had 3,334 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Roscovites.
Roscoff (in Breton, Rosko) is a French commune situated on the north coast of Brittany, in the département of Finistère, in the former principality of Léon. A former haven for privateers and then smugglers, from which the Johnnies set out to sell their pink onions, Roscoff, awarded the title of "petite cité de caractère", is a small seaside town that has preserved its architectural heritage from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its deep-water port of Bloscon is used by Brittany Ferries, which operates ferry services to the British Isles and Spain.
A little history
The warming of the climate, which began in the Epipalaeolithic period by completing the transformation of the English Channel valley into a sea, and continued after the Boreal period through to the Atlantic phase, saw in Brittany the homme de Téviec settle around -7000 near sites known as "pieds rouges" (shellfish gatherers on the foreshore), in particular that of the bay of Pemprat, to the south of Roscoff, which, in the absence of bones, preserves a køkkenmødding similar to those of the Ertebølle culture. Megalithic traces survive in modest form, including the dolmen de Kerfissiec and the lech de Reuniou. The triple allée couverte de Keravel was blown up by the landowner in 1942.
