Rodez ([ʁodɛs], sometimes incorrectly [ʁɔdɛz] through spelling pronunciation, in Occitan, Rodés, [ruˈðes]) is a French commune which is the préfecture of the département of Aveyron in the région of Occitanie, seat of Rodez Agglomération, of the first constituency of Aveyron and of the departmental council of Aveyron. A former capital of the Rouergue, the town is the seat of the diocese of Rodez et Vabres. Its inhabitants are called the Ruthénois, after the Rutènes, a Gaulish people who once occupied the territory, the former demonym "Rodanois" having given way to this learned form.
