Decazeville (in Occitan, La Sala) is a town in the French department of Aveyron and in the region of Occitanie. The union of three parishes (Saint-Roch, Saint-Michel and Vialarels) around the industrial site of Lassalle formed the foundations of the new community, created by royal ordinance in November 1833. The canton de Decazeville came into being in 1881 after thirty years of efforts, owing to the presence of a coal deposit, and in the context of the industrial revolution.
A little history
La Salle had been producing coal since the 16th century, exported via the Lot to Bordeaux, but in small quantities. Louis XIV and his successors, despite the protests of the parish, granted their mistresses ownership of the mines. In 1833, the commune of Decazeville was created by the division of the communes of Flagnac, Firmi, Livinhac-le-Haut and Aubin, while simultaneously absorbing the commune of Saint-Michel. The duc Decazes (1780–1860), who inherited the mines, founded in 1826, with the help of the polytechnician François Gracchus Cabrol, the houillères et fonderies de l'Aveyron, which were to transform this ribbon village into a major centre of the steel industry.
