Saint-Affrique (in Rouergat Occitan Sant Africa) is a French commune situated in the département of Aveyron, in the Occitanie région, and was a sub-prefecture from 1800 to 1926. In 2023, it has a population of 7,941 inhabitants. The architectural heritage of the commune includes four listed buildings protected as monuments historiques. These are the Pont Vieux, listed in 1886, the dolmen de Tièrgues, listed in 1889, the château de Mas Rougier, registered in 1979, and the pressoir de Savignac, registered in 1980.
A little history
The commune has been occupied since the Neolithic period, with the dolmen de Tièrgues and that of Crassous or Boussac as visible remains. An almost continuous occupation of the territory is attested by the presence, in various locations, of pottery shards from the Neolithic period through to the 5th and 6th centuries. (Caylus - Le Saint-Affrique d'avant Saint-Affrique, Jean Poujol, 1995, published at the author's expense, chapter I, L'environnement archéologique) Local tradition holds that around 470, Affricanus, Bishop of Comminges persecuted by the Arian Visigoths, took refuge in the Vicaria Curiensis, which subsequently took the name of Saint-Affrique.
