A little history
The earliest traces of settlement at Rochefort date back to Prehistory. Polished stone axes and flint tools have been found there. Not far away, Chalonnes is one of the most ancient inhabited places in Anjou. The ancient road along the left bank of the Loire (chemin Saumureau) ran along the foot of the slopes, whilst a Roman road followed the ridge of the slopes on the right bank of the Layon.
