Rivesaltes [ˌʁivəˈzaltə] is a French commune, situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Agly, the Llavanera, the ruisseau de Claira and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The exact date of the founding of Rivesaltes is not known, however it is thought that the town existed in 729 at the time of the Saracen invasion. In 923, a certain Landric made a gift in allod to the abbaye de Lagrasse of two churches, Sainte-Marie and Saint-André. The whole of the territory remained in the possession of the abbey until the French Revolution. Rivesaltes was fortified as early as 1172.
