Raismes [ʁɛm] is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. The commune was, in the 19th and 20th centuries, a major centre of mining activity in the Bassin minier du Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The Compagnie des mines de Vicoigne operated its pits nos 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the Compagnie des mines d'Anzin operated its pits La Grange and Sabatier. In addition to the headframe of the puits Sabatier no 2, a good number of spoil heaps and mining settlements also remain.
A little history
A hunting meeting place for Merovingian kings, the land of Raismes was held by the counts of Hainaut, the Holy Roman Emperor Henri VII du Saint-Empire et de Luxembourg, whose mother was Béatrice de Flandre-Hainaut-Beaumont, granddaughter of Countess Marguerite II and of Bouchard d'Avesnes, King René d'Anjou, great-great-grandson of Queen Bonne de Luxembourg, granddaughter of Henri VII, Nicolas Rolin (chancellor of Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy and first cousin once removed of King René), by acquisition the Cernay family, and others.
