Puilboreau is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called les Puilborains and les Puilboraines.
A little history
Puilboreau became a commune in 1858 from its neighbours Cognehors, now disappeared (Cognehors was divided between La Rochelle, Dompierre and Périgny, with the remaining part of the territory taking part in the formation of Puilboreau), Lagord and Dompierre-sur-Mer. At that time it brought together a population of around 310 inhabitants. The first mentions of the village date from the 12th century, when it was known as "Podioliborelli" upon the reception of a delegation from La Rochelle by Queen Aliénor d'Aquitaine. Subsequently, its name underwent modifications ("Puyle-Boreau", "Pilboreau") before finally becoming "Puilboreau".
