Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste (pronounced [pʁats də mɔjo la pʁɛst(ə)], in Catalan Prats de Molló i la Presta ['pɾadz də mu'ʎo j lə 'pɾestə]) is a French commune, situated in the Occitanie region, in the département des Pyrénées-Orientales and in the Haut Vallespir. The commune holds the label Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Surrounded by ramparts, its medieval old town with cobblestone alleyways is dominated by the fort Lagarde.
A little history
Wishing to develop the upper basin of the Tech, monks founded an agricultural settlement, Prats-de-Mollo. Its church is mentioned in 982. In the 13th century, the town was divided in two by the Tech. The northern part comprised the town and its population. On the southern part stood the castle of the counts of Besalu along with the other ruling families.
