Poussan [pu.sɑ̃], in Occitan Poçan [pu.'san], is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. It forms part of the unité urbaine de Sète and of the communauté d'agglomération Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vène, the Rieu Tord, the ruisseau des Oulettes and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Traces of human occupation dating back to the Neolithic period have indeed been found on the commune's territory. It would even appear that an oppidum existed at Poussan, on the hill of Puech Gayes on the borders of Poussan, on the road to Montbazin. A hillside settlement dated from the late Bronze Age III through to the end of the first Iron Age has been recorded above the mas d'Antoine, 1.5 km to the west of the village. It is surmounted by an oval enclosure of 1.5 ha on the plateau du Cayla (vieux château in Occitan), which terminates the eastern spur of the Pioch de Madame.
