Portiragnes [poʁ.ti.ʁa.ɲə] (in Occitan Portiranhas [pur.ti.'ra.ɲɔs]) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the ruisseau de l'Ardaillou, the ruisseau de la Maïre Vieille and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Excavations, notably at the pont de la Roque-Haute and at Peiro Signado, have brought to light, at Roque-Haute, one of the oldest Neolithic settlements (5750–5600 BC) of farming and livestock-raising peoples whose origins appear to be Tuscan, and, at Peiro Signado, a settlement that was likewise agricultural but of a different origin, coming from the north. Around a dozen rural establishments dating from the Roman period (-121 to 462 AD) have been uncovered. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Portiragnes became part of the kingdom of the Visigoths.
