Port-des-Barques is a coastal commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, and the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are known as the Portbarquais and Portbarquaises.
A little history
From the creation of the arsenal of Rochefort in 1666, the mouth of the Charente was incorporated into a vast port and military area. Due to the shallow depth and the navigational difficulties of the river, vessels built at Rochefort were hauled as far as the deep-water anchorage lying before Port-des-Barques, where they could moor before making their way to the roadstead of the île d'Aix to complete their fitting-out and prepare for departure. The moorings at Port-des-Barques thus formed one of the points of contact between the arsenal, the Charente and the roadsteads at the river mouth. Local craft maintained communications between the bank and the vessels that did not travel back up as far as Rochefort.
