Pont l'Abbé d'Arnoult is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called les Pontilabiens and les Pontilabiennes. Before the decree of 2 March 1962 which gave it its current name, it was simply called Pont-l'Abbé, and Pont-Libre during the French Revolution.
A little history
Pont-l'Abbé, the former name of the commune, has two different interpretations regarding its etymology, but they are linked to its geographical situation. Generally, the first meaning attributed to it derives from the Latin pontem lapidum, meaning bridge of stone, or pontum labium or labeum, a contraction of labatum, meaning a cut or destroyed bridge. Both of these meanings are said to relate to its original situation on a crossing point or commanding the crossing of a river. However, another interpretation attributes to it the name Ponti-Labium, Latin for "lip of the sea".
