A little history
The town owes its importance and its status as chef-lieu de canton to its privileged position on the Lille-Douai axis, halfway between the two towns. The name originally designated the wooded and marshy area that the Atrébates and the Nerviens considered their common border, as well as the river that ran through their region. Several names designated this commune, Pons de Marka, Marque en Peule, Marcq en Pévèle, until the administrative reform of 1802, when the current name of Pont-à-Marcq prevailed.
