Pons is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Pontois. A town with a commercial tradition, Pons is one of the principal urban centres of the southern part of Charente-Maritime, driven by its industrial and tourist activities.
A little history
The ancient name of the town's site is not known. The town of Pons is a medieval creation that grew around a Benedictine priory dedicated to Saint-Martin. Its name, which designates a wooden bridge over the Seudre, does not appear until the middle of the 12th century as that of a lordship. Archaeology reveals on the high ground a Gaulish oppidum and then a Roman occupation, which left few traces and no written sources.
