Pollestres [pɔjɛstʁ] is a French commune, situated in the east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitanie region. Its inhabitants are called the Pollestrencs. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne.
A little history
The most probable origin appears to be a manorial name derived from the Latin "Pollastra", meaning pullet, a common Roman surname. In the 9th century, the place is found referred to as Villa Rasti, Raste, Polestros.
