Pithiviers is a French commune situated in the département du Loiret, in the région Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Essonne. Bordered by the Œuf, it sits on the limestone bedrock of the ancient lake of the natural region of la Beauce and presents little in the way of relief.
A little history
Pithiviers was a Gaulish village (from which it takes its name), and later Gallo-Roman. There was a castle at Pithiviers, built around the year one thousand, which included the collégiale Saint-Georges and the keep commissioned by Héloïse de Pithiviers from the master builder Lanfred, who would also work on the château d'Ivry-la-Bataille. This keep of 33 metres dominated the town for nearly 840 years before its demolition in 1837. Today the Théâtre du Donjon evokes its memory nearby.
